MOST of us love manual transmissions, the other 2% just say they hate it just like people lie and say they hate the Beatles :) So what is your favorite stock or dealer option shift knob?
![]() 01/16/2014 at 08:45 |

But ... I do hate the Beatles. Seriously. I mean it.

I was always fond of the leather-stitched

Other than the "golfball" in the GTi?
I like the knob in the Citroën Ami.
Such a classic "no frills" design.

Saying Ferrari's metal ball would be too obvious, and Ferraris with proper manual transmissions are getting extinct anyway.
So I'll go with a similar one in a lot cheaper car: the old Ford SportKa/StreetKa's:

I am a big fan of the shift knob that came with the ZHP package on the E46.

I love the factory knob in my C900. I wanna get it leather wrapped, or find one of the leather option ones in a junkyard somewhere. Then I'm gonna put this shift pattern indicator on it
See if this pic works

I don't even like the 355 in general. But to this day I remember in 1998 when I saw this in a car magazine.
I think I was the only kid that had a picture of a shifter on his wall.

I actually forgot about this one. I have ripped a few of them and love it

Biased answer.
Just don't leave the bloody thing in the sun or you will suffer third degree burns on your palm.

I have in fact shifted one of these. One of the biggest shocks of my life was after my parents divorced, my mom dated a guy who had "a nice red sports car that I should see". I heard it coming up my street and down my driveway, looked out and just about shat myself. Guy was like, here take it up the street! Dude ended up being a dick, but that sticks out in my brain as one of the biggest surprises of my life.

all of this is how I feel. I just didnt have the shifter on my wall

The best thing about it is the 'click click click' when you shift, never gets old...

I miss my SVT Focus so much.
And I use to blow my friends' minds in highschool when I'd slam gears with them in the car. Best little 4-banger I've ever owned.

Nice. Came here to post the ZHP knob as well. Paired with an Alcantara boot, there is no nicer combo for a BMW.

man when I was in high school the only "fast cars" we had were 80's tech. I would have been dead had we had something like an SVT focus. I drove a 16v Scirocco and my nemesis had a Sentra SE-R. That was the hottest shit in affordable 4 cylinder land back then!

I much prefer a leather wrapped knob to metal. Metal look nice, leather feels better.

I actually don't like this one much overall, but the reverse lockout is neat
You can kinda see it here, the silver ring is actually connected to a tab that runs up the front, so if you put your hand on top of the knob and curl your fingers around the front and pull up. Again, not really special but an interesting way of doing it.
I haven't used enough knobs to have one that I like all that much.

Slice! Seems like they are either a kit or homemade. For a Prelude.

I agree, but that has to be the worst start/stop button placement ever

oh yeah, wonder what tranny is being run for this. By the looks of it probably a relay system to engage 1-2-3-D :)

Agreed. I have one in my E36, infinitely better than the stock knob in my opinion.

I'd love to have a 16v Scirocco too! But, I got lucky in highschool. Dad was a car enthusiast, I only had money for a basic Focus, and he wasn't about to have some plain looking Focus sit in the driveway lol.

Interesting to see that the radio used in that car is the same as one in a Porsche...

And a damn fine radio it is too. I liked it so much I bought a Becker-branded version for my 500E.

I really like the shifter in the Datsun 240z/260z/280z. The combination of the wood grain and the lace-up shifter boot just looks awesome.

Any old wooden Jag shift knob. Although the black ones from the Series 2/3 E-types are pretty cool too.

exactly my thought...and well I guess it is stock! In a car like that I would have expected a metal ball
![]() 01/16/2014 at 15:22 |
|
Yea, i would too, but Porsche being the people they are had to go with the lightest material. Which as it happens is balsa wood. I guess if they wanted to be really fancy and keep it metal they would've made it out of beryllium like the brake discs on the 909, or titanium even.

I've been looking for one of these on ebay/craigslist since I bought my car. I've got the wood wheel, but this weird aluminum shift knob. They are harder to get than plutonium.

What year do you have? A Z car is on my "someday" list, once I have a garage and parking space for it.

Personal favorite for looks and feel, the Pagani Zonda shift knob. The picture is of a replica that I made on my own, I DD it in my Mini Cooper.
Metal is a mix of 316 stainless and 4140 chromoly, and the wood is black walnut. If my recreation is anything close to what the Zonda knob feels like, Pagani really has their shit together. This thing is amazing.

71. Not very modified, still running SUs on an L24, but with a 5 speed, and slightly lowered suspension.

Whalen Shift Machine! 18 ounces of stainless steel (yep, over a pound). It's one of my favorite mods on my Mini. It fits my hand perfectly, it feels incredibly solid, and it even makes shifting a little smoother. It has a quick-release locking mechanism so it's easy to pop off and keep inside on really hot and really cold days (although you will forget all about that and burn/freeze your hand off from time to time).

I like the shift knob from the current Genesis Coupe. Too bad I can't say the same if it's front fascia.
